Note: Important information regarding the layout, background, as well as purpose and goal for this study I have put together in the Preface.
After John had been imprisoned, Jesus was opening his public ministry officially with the proclamation of the acceptable year of the Lord with the reading from Isaiah 61 at the synagogue at Nazareth on the sabbath after Pentecost.
This opening phase of Jesus' ministry is characterized by several signs and miracles happening as he indeed is fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah, the activities are concentrated on the area of Galilee and the cities around the sea of Galilee.
Jesus now proclaimed the gospel of the kingdom of heaven, and two of his major teachings happen during this time period: the sermon the the mount, and shortly thereafter a sermon on the plain.
The gospels of Mark and Luke are generally following a chronological order in the way they record the events of Jesus' life and ministry, whereas several larger sections in the gospel of Matthew are recorded in topical order rather than chronological order (these events are listed in the table enclosed in [ ] brackets.
